Welcome to blogXperiment #1!

It's Wednesday- so welcome to my*world= and some of the amazing projects I get to work on.

A few weeks ago I had the most wonderful time photographing my friends s&s at their wedding... Yesterday I got to hand over the finished photos and hear about how life is goin' for the newlyweds. Sigh. They are tooo cute.

* Some things I learned from this shoot....

You can never have enough memory cards on a wedding day. I felt like I was always filling cards up... so right after the wedding I started to purchase/stockpile a heap of 16-32GB cards. ha.
Group photos are something you have to practice a LOT to get good at.
Bright sunny days suck. So I tried to work with them instead of fight them.

And yes... if've you've been following some of my crazy projects in the past you may have recognized these lovely two from this...

Today was "The DAY"- The day we were presented with major and elective choices for our second year in CreComm.

Journalism
Media Production
Advertising
Public Relations

I sat there stunned- Is there an option where I can pick multiple majors?! What if I want to do them all?!!!?
Clearly the answer is No. But, in my heart of hearts I know secretly I will wish I could have been in more than one. Sigh.
So... for now... I found a great mantra when it comes to picking a major... and we'll see what happens.
Wise words Julia, wise words.

This last week we had the lovely people from Velocity Branding (a Winnipeg based brand strategy/marketing agency) come and chat with first year CreComm students.
There was some wonderful advise from Chris and Jason about branding...

Something that I really was struck by was the slide above "A brand is NOT what you say it is... It is what THEY say it is."
When I was creating my brand last semester for class I remember struggling to know what to write about myself... I wanted it to not only sound great but be true to who I am. I spent hours on this (mostly sitting in front of a blank screen). And it struck me that I didn't use my greatest resource... I didn't ask others what it is they would say about me.
Clearly, it is a little awkward to talk to people about what they think of me, BUT it is way more authentic then having a list of words that I think are true to me, when really they aren't.
So the real question is who do you think I am? And am i true to what I say?!

Although it is the beginning of the new year, new resolutions (or revisiting old resolutions), and lists of new things to do I am nearing the end of my own list of things to do. With just over a month until turn another year ~~older~~ younger I am dangerously close to finishing almost all of my list of 26 things to do (more to come on that) in "The Year of Class". Yes... I entitled this past year of my life The Year of Class because well; I feel it just felt like this would be a classy kind of year. And ever if there was a true test of if something should be included in The Year of Class I look no further than Audrey.
Audrey is the epitome of class- in fashion and style, in grace and poise... nothing compare with Audrey.
I stumbled across this photo from a blog that I am serious in love with (if only I knew how he found so many cool things)- and I it has now become the background of my computer.
I love how simple the photos are- yet the capture such an authentic moment in her life... as if they are letting you into to their stroll down the lane.
sigh- now that is class.

the year of *class

Blog it, tweet it, tumble it.
Much was discussed at our last seminar for us first year CreComms.
We had Winnipeg bloggers come and share a round 2 of info... and I feel like there could be a round 3 with all the crazy questions we all have on how to keep on top of all the social media stuff we are plugged in to (both personally and for school).

After much wisdom here are some thoughts I pondered after the event:

Alyson Shane: Pick a day an write consistently on it- like her Hip Hop Sunday posts.

Liz Hover: Don't start tweeting until you got your blog together. Don't add a facebook page until your website is good. Essentially don't do a bunch of things if they are all going to be garbage.
And Google+ is dead...
*(But don't worry Google+ I'm still pullin for ya!)

Erica Glasier: for more blog traffic: newsjack fast, newsjack often... Newsjacking
*(has anyone tried to newjack the newsjacking of newsjacking?!?! Well... lets make an attempt shall we?!)

James Hope Howard:As much as you can try... sometimes getting hits on your blog is random.
*(this made me feel like I have hope!)

Shelly Cook: Starting five different blogs is CreComm suicide! But go for it!
*(I second that Shelly... I'm on my second blog in the school year- third blog of this year- and 5th blog in my blogging live... eekkkk!!!)

After a solid 50 minutes of tips/thoughts on social media I was personally still in the dark and left wondering if I will ever make it in the communications industry since blog doesn't get a consistent 5000 hits a day.

And to cap it all of no one even mentioned the bustling platform known as Pinterest... sigh-

bloggers* round 2

I have always loved history- I love the nostalgic feeling, the sense of pride, and the outfits... but never have I thought one day I might be the one making history.

Mark Reid, Editor-in-Chief at Canada's History, came to Thursdays CreComm seminar.
He shared about Canada's History and his own history. But it seemed to be less of a boring list of facts, and more about the telling of a beautiful story.
"We try to aim for the heart of the story- I look for stories- hopefully stories that make a difference," said Reid.
When you think about history as story, you begin to wonder what's the part you play in it. I mean, I have a story- YOU have a story... so where does it fit into history?

I clearly remember walking into my first day of classes in grade seven. I have an off-white, short sleeved, knitted turtle neck on. My jeans are tapered and stonewashed. And my white clogs completed my outfit. I walk through the hallways in a daze. My previous school had just under 40 kids from grades 1-8. This school had over 350 with grades 7-12. I feel like I'm at the bottom of the food chain.

Note: That day may not have made history for anyone other than me.

Fast forward to my grade 11 year. I am sitting in the second row of chairs in choir class. My love hate relationship with choir is the base on the fact that I love being in a class that comes easy to me and would result in a trip at the end of the year- but I hated being on of the few girls who had to sing in the tenor section.
Sometime between the beginning of class and vocal warm-up exercises, someone tells us that the twin towers in NYC have just been hit. A television is quickly rolled into the room so we can watch what is happening over 1600 miles away. The whole day was spent watching the television- trying to catch glimpses of the chaos beyond.

Note: Although 9/11 was experienced by many, no one had the same history.

August 29, 2011. The day has come and I'm packed into a room with 75 other hopeful CreComm students at our orientation. We are told to look to the right and the left: these are our potential coworkers, or employees or even employers. If we look straight ahead: these are our potential job references, connections to the industry, and future lifelines.
Be sure to show up on time, hand things in prior to dead line, and DON'T misspell a proper noun- these will all result in an auto fail.
"Welcome to the beginning of your professional career," we are told.

Note: Welcome the beginning of history in the making.

Thursdays seminar class Mark Reid spoke.
"Anything you write as a journalist will be considered history," he said.

Note: He also said, "It doesn’t matter how many facts are on your side; you always lose against a great photo op."

canada's *history

Turns out that yesterday was a Winnipeg Free Press themed day- we had the editor of the Free Press, Margo Goodhand, come and talk with us CreCommers- it was exciting, inspiring, and calming to know that there is a job out there for someone who likes to take on the world and fill up her plate till it is overflowing.

From there- the day just got better... I got a chance to hang out with a lovely friend of mine, *H, and catch up on life. We always try new and different places so we decided on meeting up at the Winnipeg Free Press Cafe...

in short- best choice ever- who knew a bruschetta grilled cheese sandwich was even an option in life?!

I feel like *H's expression says it all. It was just that good. Too bad they closed at 6, because between the food and the conversation I think we could have been there till 11pm- just sayin.
